The Awakening

Opening up your outdoor space for spring

Spring in East Tennessee moves fast. The light shifts, the redbuds fire up, and suddenly the patio furniture that’s been under covers since November is two weeks behind where you want it to be. Pull the covers, assess what you’ve got, and get it set up — here’s how to do it right.

Where to Start

The Open-Up

Check the frames and joints first — teak and wrought iron hold up well through a Tennessee winter. Cushions stored indoors will be fine. Anything left outside may have mildew — it’s easy to treat if you catch it now, before it sets into the fabric.

Cushion Care

Mildew on outdoor cushions is common after winter — and straightforward to remove if you act early. Our guide walks through the process.

Once the furniture is out, sit in the space before you do anything else. Winter has a way of revealing what isn’t working.

Do This Weekend

The spring open-up checklist

  • Remove covers, inspect frame joints and hardware
  • Air out stored cushions; treat any mildew now
  • Sweep and rinse the surface
  • Reposition furniture — spring sun angle is different
  • Note what needs replacing before the season is underway

Worth Considering

What to Upgrade

Every outdoor space has a piece it’s been missing. The chair that actually gets used, the table sized for how you eat outside, the sofa that makes the space feel like a room rather than leftover square footage. Spring is the right moment to make the call. East Tennessee runs nine months of usable outdoor season — it earns the investment.

A few pieces worth considering: the Astoria Sofa Raffia anchors a conversation area with deep cushions and all-weather wicker. The Montauk Sofa brings a clean, modern line to a covered porch. For something more structured, the Trieste Outdoor Sofa pairs well with smaller patios. And the Reflections Swivel Rocker is the kind of chair that quietly becomes everyone’s favorite seat.
