Austin design, orchard hardwood, and 1.3 million trees
Home Trends & Design has been designing furniture out of Austin, Texas since 2005—long enough to land on the Inc. 5000 list and to be named one of the city's fastest-growing companies, but the reason we carry them is simpler than that. They build in solid hardwood using joinery that holds, and they are unusually serious about where the wood comes from.
Most of the line is mango: a dense tropical hardwood taken from orchard trees that have finished bearing fruit, which means the timber is a byproduct of farming rather than a reason to clear forest. HTD was a founding member of the Sustainable Furnishings Council, and their Mango Foundation has planted 5,000 trees a year with One Tree Planted since 2020. After the 2015 Bastrop County wildfires, the foundation and more than 1,500 volunteers replanted the Lost Pines forest—1.3 million trees in three years.
It is rare to find furniture at this price built from solid hardwood with real joinery. That is the whole reason it is on our floor.
How it's built
Three things worth understanding before you buy: the wood, the joinery, and the stone.
Solid Mango and Birch
Almost everything HTD makes starts as solid hardwood—mango for the warm, heavily figured pieces and birch where a tighter, more uniform grain suits the design. Mango is a genuinely interesting choice: it's a fast-growing tropical hardwood harvested from orchard trees that have finished their fruit-bearing life, so the timber is a byproduct of agriculture rather than a reason to cut forest. It also happens to be dense, takes a stain beautifully, and shows the kind of dramatic grain movement you can see in the photo above. Tops are hand-planed and hand-finished, which is why two tables in the same finish are never quite identical.
Joinery You Can Look For
HTD builds with mortise-and-tenon joinery, floating panels and tops, hand-turned legs and components, and dovetailed drawer boxes. Those aren't decorative details—they're the choices that decide whether a dining table is still tight in twenty years. Floating tops in particular matter more than people realise: solid wood moves with humidity, and a top that's allowed to expand and contract doesn't split. You'll also find Dutchman patches and butterfly joints used deliberately on some pieces, stabilising a natural check in the timber rather than hiding it.
Stone Tops and Metal Bases
Alongside the all-wood collections, HTD runs a program of stone-topped occasional tables—travertine, emperador marble, agate, tiger eye, septarian—usually paired with cast or reclaimed iron bases. Each slab is different, so the piece you receive won't match the photograph exactly; that's the nature of stone and, frankly, the appeal. The Detroit and Calico side tables are the easiest way into this part of the line, and the larger marble dining and office pieces show what it looks like at scale.

Where is Home Trends & Design furniture made?

Is mango wood durable?
Yes—it's a dense tropical hardwood, comparable to many of the domestic hardwoods you'd expect in dining furniture. It's also more sustainable than most: mango trees are grown for fruit, and the timber is harvested once they stop producing, so the wood is a byproduct of an orchard rather than a reason to log a forest. The main thing to know is that mango has a lot of natural grain variation, so expect character rather than uniformity.
Will my stone top look exactly like the photo?
No, and that's worth knowing before you order. Travertine, marble, agate, and tiger eye are natural stone—veining, colour, and pattern vary slab to slab.
